All three can also be used for Wedding Breakfasts and Receptions all the year round subject to availability. The Music Room is the biggest and arguably the most impressive room in the hotel with many features which include a floor to ceiling carved alabaster fireplace and original minstrels gallery.

Gilbert’s is the second largest room in the main house and can accommodate up to 60 guests, has its own external entrance and bar/lounge area and has plenty of natural light.

The Drawing Room is equally attractive with its original oak panelled walls, beautiful inglenook fireplace and surround and lovely views across the croquet lawn.

During the summer, many couples choose to have their Reception or Breakfast on the hotel lawns which is a very beautiful and tranquil setting and which is surrounded by formal gardens and 40 acres of lovely woodland.

There are three different banqueting packages – Lily at £99, Rose at £125 and Orchid at £140 although the hotel also offers some amazing special winter offers. All the food is prepared in the hotel’s award winning kitchens by head chef Daren Mason and his team and includes ingredients sourced from the hotel’s own vegetable gardens and greenhouses whenever possible.

Food Club Meets At the Grim's Dyke

The Grim’s Dyke recently hosted a dinner for the Food Club, the influential London-based networking organisation which was established 14 years ago as a forum for people working in the food industry.

The Food Club
Guest speaker at the dinner was Alan Gowans of Anthony Byrne Fine Wines who spoke about wine and held a tasting.

The Food Club was originally set-up with funding from the London Borough of Harrow and Brent to help small businesses grow but is now entirely self-funded and is no longer confined to just small companies.

It currently has over 100 members who are food manufacturers, importers and exporters, wholesalers, distributors. caterers and suppliers to the food sector. The Grim’s Dyke is also a member.

It meets ten times a year and has the support of major food retailers such as Waitrose. Marks & Spencer, Tesco and Sainsbury.

The Food Club’s chairman is Rob Nugent who is Operations Director of Direct Table Foods which is the UK’s second largest bacon producer.

Commented Rob:
“I live near the hotel and have been going there since I was a child. More recently I’ve been going to their Gourmet Evenings which are fantastic so it was a genuine pleasure to be able to hold the Food Club dinner at the hotel”.

WILDLIFE AT THE GRIM'S DYKE!

The hotel grounds are proving to be an increasingly popular wildlife habitat and the latest arrivals to take up residence is a family of Mallard ducks. A male and a female arrived in the Spring and shortly afterwards six little baby ducklings were hatched.

The family now live happily on the pool that runs along the side of the sunken rose garden and next to the ancient earthworks from which the hotel take its name.

The woodland surrounding the formal gardens is home to a rare species of deer and earlier this year equally rare Great Crested Newts were found on the site of the old lake where Sir William Gilbert tragically drowned 100 years ago this year.

One of the country’s leading wildlife societies has teamed up with the hotel and Harrow Council to restore the lake and try and establish a Great Crested Newt colony.

More about this in next month’s issue of Gilbert’s Gossip!
